New York City 2013-2014 Winter Forecast

About the Normal New York Seasons (Wiki)
The Climate of New York state is generally humid continental, and features significant variation over the year. Winter temperatures average below freezing during January and February but near freezing along the Atlantic coastline, while summerlike conditions prevail from June to August statewide. Cold air dammingeast of the Appalachians leads to protracted periods of cloud cover and precipitation east of the range, primarily between October and April. On average, western New York is cloudier than southeast New York, much of it generated from the Great Lakes. Greenhouse gas emission is low on a per capita basis when compared to most other states due to the extensive use of mass transit, particularly across New York City. The significant urbanization within New York City has led to an urban heat island, which causes temperatures to be warmer overnight in all seasons.

Precipitation-wise, extratropical cyclones bring much of the precipitation to the region from fall through spring. Significant Lake-effect snows fall downwind of Lake Ontario and well as the Finger Lakes region of New ≈ Large, long-lived complexes of thunderstorms can invade the state from Canada and the Great Lakes during the summer, while tropical cyclones can bring rains and winds from the southwest during the summer and fall. Hurricane impacts on the state occur once every 18–19 years, with major hurricane impacts every 70–74 years. An average of ten tornadoes touch down in New York annually.

Chicago Winter Forecast 2013-2014

About the Normal Chicago Season (Wiki)

Winter in Chicago proves quite variable: Seasonal snowfall in the city has ranged from 9.8 inches (24.9 cm) (in 1920–21) up to 89.7 in (228 cm) (in 1978–79). Most winters produce a few snow falls during the season in light accumulations of around 2 in (5.1 cm), an amount often lighter than what occurs during the same snowstorms in cities on the other (windward) side of Lake Michigan. The city rarely receives the lake effect snow that falls on these windward communities because it is on the leeward side of the lake, meaning prevailing westerlies that cross the region pick up moisture from Lake Michigan only after passing Chicago. However, every three years or so northeasterly winds during the winter cause Chicago to experience a heavier snowstorm that can produce over 10 in (25 cm) of snow over a 1–3 day period, a level of snowfall more commonly seen in cities on the other side of the lake such as Grand Rapids, MichiganKalamazoo, Michigan, and South Bend, Indiana.

Winter temperatures can vary wildly within the span of one week. The daily average temperature in January at Midway Airport is 24.8 °F (−4.0 °C), and temperatures often stay below freezing for several consecutive days or even weeks in January and February. Temperatures drop to or below 0 °F (−18 °C) on 5.5 nights annually at Midway and 8.2 nights at O'Hare, although subzero (°F) readings in the absence of snow cover are rare, and the warming effect of Lake Michigan during the winter makes them less common on the lakefront than in more inland parts of the city. Highs reach 50 °F (10 °C) on 8.8 days from December to February at Midway, and though it is extremely rare, temperatures in late winter have surpassed 80 °F (27 °C)
